On September 1, 2021, Pope Francis, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, and Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby issued “A Joint Message for the Protection of Creation,” calling on the world to address the current crisis of global climate change. The joint message asks everyone, regardless of belief or worldview, to respond simultaneously to the needs of the earth and the needs of the poor, “…examining their behaviour and pledging meaningful sacrifices for the sake of the earth which God has given us” (from “A Joint Message for the Protection of Creation”). The message was issued at the beginning of the 2021 Season of Creation and in advance of the UN Climate Change Conference set to gather in Glasgow, Scotland, in November. This webinar will feature a panel of scholars exploring the significance and implications of this message for churches and for the world.
This event is co-sponsored by Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and its Department of Theology and Religious Studies in partnership with the Ecclesiological Investigations International Research Network and Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute.
This event will be recorded and a captioned video will be posted to this page after the event date. Please RSVP to receive an email notification once it is posted.
